Ursa Major 10/20/2011
Ursa looked like a fuzzy bear cub when we got her and was my "little Shortcake" because her legs were so short for so long, although she lived up to the name in full as she matured. Her other puppy nickname was "Fishface", because she was expert at getting into the fence where we hung salmon to freeze dry for winter dog food and help herself then sneak out. But her smelly face always gave her away.
Ursa is our biggest female. She weighed in at 50 lbs at 4 months old.
No longer worthy of her puppy nicknames, she's a long and leggy 85 lbs.
Ursa is a great leader and loves people and puppies. She was quite an amazing surrogate mother at 1 year old when we brought home ten 6 weeks old rescue puppies. Immediately she took charge and started cleaning, guarding and snuggling with them, even letting them nurse so much she actually started lactating! Since then, Ursa is our go to "mother" for rescue puppies and she has taken care of many over the years. She had one litter of her own in April, 2016 with Richter who belongs to our friends Scott and Laura Sample and we have her son Basin from that litter.
Ursa LOVES belly rubs and will stretch out in anticipation every chance she gets. She also likes to lean into people and as big as she is has inadvertently pushed a couple over! She's also the only dog I trust 100% off leash. She's a real people dog and wants to be where her people are.
